I’ve always been fascinated by cryptids. Cryptids are “unknown species” whose existence is widely debated. They make no sense whatsoever, but somehow feel more real than ghosts. They exist between folklore and possibility, serving as a reminder that there are still many mysteries in this world we haven’t fully figured out.

To kick things off, I thought I’d start close to home. If you grew up in the Inland Empire or enjoy exploring national parks, you may have heard the stories of the Yucca Man, an imposing creature known for glowing red eyes, enormous size, and a stench so stanky that witnesses often report smelling it before they ever see it (Longreads, 2018; Cryptid Wiki, n.d.).

Yikes. Tough first impressions.

The Yucca Man is typically described as standing anywhere from 6 to 12 feet tall, covered in coarse tan or brown hair, and roaming the remote stretches of the Mojave Desert. According to local accounts, crossing paths with the creature is an experience few ever forget (Longreads, 2018; MOAH, 2022).

One of the earliest and most frequently retold encounters dates back to 1971 near the Marine Corps training grounds in Twentynine Palms. According to the story, a young Marine was standing watch on a cool, quiet night when a low growl broke the desert silence (Longreads, 2018).

At first, he couldn’t identify the source. The darkness concealed whatever was moving beyond the edge of his vision. The growling continued as the unseen creature circled the post, breathing heavily as though stalking prey.

Determined to investigate, the Marine stepped out with his rifle. Suddenly, everything went silent. He scanned the darkness, reasoning that whatever he had heard seemed too large to be a coyote. Maybe a mountain lion, he thought. Then the air changed. A powerful odor filled the area, sharp and overwhelming enough to make him sick.

The Marine reportedly turned to retreat, but before he could get away, the creature charged.

Hours later, he was allegedly discovered unconscious on the ground with his rifle bent nearly in half (Longreads, 2018).

Since that first sighting, reports of the Yucca Man have continued to surface throughout the Mojave Desert and around Joshua Tree National Park. Stories range from mysterious nighttime visits to campsites and oversized footprints in the sand, to blurry photographs and fleeting glimpses of a large, hairy figure moving among the rocks (MOAH, 2022; Cryptid Wiki, n.d.).

One of the most well-known accounts comes from the Hidden Valley area of Joshua Tree, where witnesses claimed to see a Bigfoot-like creature leaping across massive boulders. Other stories place the creature farther west near Palmdale, while some local legends even connect it to the so-called “Speedway Monster” reportedly seen near Fontana Drag City in the 1960s and 1970s (CalEXPLORnia, 2026; Cryptid Wiki, n.d.).

But the Yucca Man may be connected to something even older. Some researchers and storytellers have drawn parallels between the Yucca Man and Tahquitz (Takwis), a powerful figure in Cahuilla oral traditions. In Cahuilla stories, Tahquitz is often portrayed as a supernatural being associated with danger, power, and the wilderness surrounding Tahquitz Rock, also known as Lily Rock, near Idyllwild (Kimberly Us, 2022).

Descriptions of Tahquitz vary across tellings. In some accounts, he is portrayed as a powerful shaman or spirit capable of causing storms, earthquakes, and misfortune. Other interpretations describe strange lights or fiery manifestations moving across the night sky (Kimberly Us, 2022). While there is no direct evidence linking Tahquitz to the Yucca Man, the comparison highlights how desert folklore often blends Indigenous stories, local legends, and modern cryptid sightings.

Across decades of reports, the details remain surprisingly consistent: glowing eyes, enormous footprints, guttural growls, and a powerful musky odor that lingers long after the creature is gone.

So what is the Yucca Man?

A surviving relic from an undiscovered species? A misidentified animal? A legend that has grown with each retelling? Or maybe something else entirely.

Until someone brave dares to go looking for answers, the Yucca Man remains what it has always been: a shadow moving through the Mojave night.
